    What is compost tea?

Compost tea is water that has been steeped in compost. It utilizes the best parts of composting by turning nutrient-rich organisms found in compost into a liquid concentrate for your garden. The liquid mixture consists of superior nutrients, bacteria, microbes, and enzymes for your plants’ health. A mixture of compounds in the tea, called humates, assists plants in better utilizing nutrients available in the soil. Compost tea optimizes your plants’ roots and overall growth. It provides protection against disease, improves soil structure, and increases plant nutrient consumption.

Old-school farmers used to make their own “witches brew” of compost tea by steeping water in their own compost and regularly applying the tea to their soil and plants. Commercial compost tea recipes, such as Boogie Brew, provide high-quality formulas that have been carefully designed for premium benefits. Using the same expertly-crafted brew ensures your garden receives the best nutrients every time.

What is Boogie Brew Tea made of?

Boogie brew is expertly formulated with high-quality ingredients. The compost tea recipe is carefully sourced to meet your organic farming needs.

Boogie Base (Formula Part A) Ingredients: Worm castings, composted wood chips, bio-char, trace ocean minerals, volcanic rock ash, fossilized kelp

  • Why Hobbyists and Commercial Growers Love Fish Fertilizer

Choosing the Best Fertilizer for Vegetables

Think about the last time you ate a mouthwatering tomato. It was probably brightly colored and full of flavor, but most importantly, it came from a healthy plant. Healthy plants produce delicious vegetables. Fertilizer is just as vital to plant health as sunlight and water. Fertilizer provides key nutrients that support plant growth, stress prevention, and vegetable flavor. Enjoy the fruits (or veggies) of your labor by choosing the best fertilizer for your vegetables.

Most farmers and gardeners agree on the benefits of fertilizer, but if you search for what fertilizer to buy, you’ll receive an overwhelming hoard of recommended brands and products. With tons of fertilizer options available, it can be hard to make a choice. That’s why we’ve taken our agricultural expertise and narrowed it down for your easy understanding. Read more below for our sound advice on fertilizing your garden and watch your vegetables grow!

Types of Fertilizer: Organic vs. Synthetic

The first question you may want to ask yourself is whether to purchase organic or synthetic fertilizer. Both organic and synthetic fertilizers have the same goal of improving plant health, but the ingredients they utilize to fulfill this goal are quite different. You may want to read the ingredients on the label before selecting your fertilizer.

Organic fertilizers are comprised of naturally occurring materials from plants or animals. They typically work by feeding the soil which in turn feeds the plant. Organic fertilizers nourish both the plant and the earth where it grows.

Synthetic fertilizers, also called inorganic or chemical fertilizers, are comprised of altered chemicals. In general, synthetic fertilizers work fast to boost growth by feeding the plant through quick absorption.

    At a glance:

    Organic

    • Improve soil structure
    • Slow-release
    • Break down easily in environment
    • Eco-friendly

    Synthetic

    • Improve plant health quickly
    • Do not improve soil structure
    • Requires repeated applications
    • Harmful to environment

    Granular vs Liquid

Both granular and liquid fertilizers can be organic or synthetic. While one is not necessarily better than the other, they each have their own set of advantages. Choosing the right type depends on your specific needs or preferences.

Granular fertilizer is a dry form of fertilizer that comes in granules or small particles. You may see granular fertilizers formed by tiny pellets or coarse powder. They typically are slow-release forms of fertilizer, breaking down over time in the soil and providing nutrients to your plants for months.

Liquid fertilizer is a liquid substance that can be applied on the soil or by spraying the leaves. Foliar spraying is fast-acting as the leaves absorb the nutrients right away. It dissolves quickly. You’ll need to re-apply more frequently than granular fertilizer.

    At a glance:

    Granular

    • Apply in soil or as top dressing
    • Easy to store
    • Slow-release
    • Good choice for bulk usage

    Liquid

    • Apply on ground or foliar spray
    • Easy application
    • Fast-acting
    • Great for mid-season usage

What nutrients do your vegetable plants need?

The most common measurement of plant fertilizer is the N-P-K ratio. It is a set of three numbers listed on the label to show the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the fertilizer. Nitrogen produces green, healthy leaves. Phosphorus stimulates growth from the roots. Potassium promotes the plant’s overall wellbeing and protection against stress.

While N-P-K is typically the first thing you’ll find on the fertilizer label, you may want to consider additional nutrients that optimize plant health such as magnesium, calcium, and sulfur. Micronutrients like iron, zinc, and copper are also necessary to support plant health.

Unfortunately, there’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to the amount of specific nutrients your garden or crops need to grow delicious vegetables. The quality of your soil plays a huge role in determining what supplements your plants need. A soil test is a great way to better understand the nutrients your soil already has or may be lacking.

How much fertilizer do your plants need?

Not all vegetables need the same care and attention. Different plants require different environments and nutrients. It’s important to understand the needs of your vegetables. Know which ones are heavy feeders and which ones are light feeders so that you can apply the perfect amount for their abundant growth.

Heavy feeders require a lot of nutrients to grow and produce. It’s beneficial to mix fertilizer in the soil prior to planting. As they continue to grow, heavy feeders will be happy with regular fertilizer application.

    Heavy feeders at a glance:

    • Tomatoes
    • Cabbage
    • Broccoli
    • Sunflowers
    • Kale
    • Lettuce
    • Parsley
    • Spinach
    • Asparagus
    • Celery
    • Corn
    • Cucumbers
    • Melons
    • Okra
    • Peppers
    • Cauliflower
    • Artichoke
    • Cilantro
    • Eggplant

Light feeders do not need as many nutrients as heavy feeders do. While they still benefit from fertilizer application, you won’t need to apply it as frequently as heavy feeders. Light feeders tend to be root vegetables.

    Light feeders at a glance:

    • Arugula
    • Carrots
    • Collard greens
    • Peas
    • Swiss chard
    • Beans
    • Garlic
    • Onion
    • Leeks
    • Shallots
    • Rutabaga
    • Potato

You’re not the only one who wants to eat the vegetables from your garden. Unfortunately, pests view your garden as an unlimited source of food. They can satisfy all their cravings meal after meal by gnawing and destroying your plants. Nobody wants to deal with pests in their garden but when the invasion comes to your backyard, you need a quick solution to prevent total destruction of your garden. Finding the best insecticide for your vegetable garden is key to saving your plants and vegetables. Don’t waste your time on weak attempts to shoo the bugs away. Defend your garden quickly with an insecticide that keeps your vegetables safe.

    Understand the Signs

Detecting plant damage is the first step to spotting a pest problem in your garden. Keep a watchful eye on the leaves, the vegetables, and the soil. Each day counts when insects start to feast on your plants. The longer you wait to notice the signs of infestation, the more damage the insects cause. Spot the following signs quickly to protect your garden:

    Bite Marks or Holes

Different pests leave different marks, but holes are a common sign of their presence. The size of the holes may vary depending on the pest. Consistent markings on the leaves mean someone is dining in your garden. Sawflies tend to chew the leaves making partial holes. Pests bite holes in tomatoes and all types of vegetables. Keep your eyes peeled for holes around the leaves and vegetables to quickly spot pests.

    Wilted leaves

Although this can be a sign of poor plant health, pests may be the culprit. Sad-looking leaves could signify the presence of aphids, which suck the moisture out of your plant and cause the leaves to wilt and fall prematurely.

    Discoloration

If you see any type of discoloration in leaves, you should further inspect for pests. Some pests may cause yellow spots or brown spots while the leaf is still intact. There is no singular form of discoloration as it may vary from the type of pest and the targeted leaf. Black spots may be a sign of fungal damage that you need to control.

    Eggs

Small clusters on the stems, tops of leaves, or the undersides of leaves may be a sign of eggs.  Pests happy with your never-ending food supply quickly try to grow their family. You may be able to identify the type of pests from the egg cluster, shape, and color.

    Slime

Shiny lines of slime around your garden could be caused by snails or slugs. In addition to bite marks, silver lines made from snails or slugs are evidence of their presence in your garden.

    Sawdust

A pile of sawdust at the base of your plant could be from carpenter ants. As they work their way through your plant or tree, they leave small shavings as their evidence.

    Type of Pests

Insects and mites are common pests for vegetable gardens. Unfortunately, the list of possible garden pests is long:

    • Army worms
    • Aphids
    • Thrips
    • Fruit flies
    • Leaf hoppers
    • Leaf miners
    • Mealy bugs
    • Scales (Red & Brown)
    • Snails
    • Mites
    • Pepper weevils
    • Potato beetles
    • Stable and Deer flies
    • Whiteflies
    • Mosquitoes
    • Flies
    • Gnats
    • No-See-Ums
    • Chiggers
    • Ticks
    • Silverfish
    • Crickets
    • Moths
    • Cinch bugs
    • Ants
    • Palmetto Bugs
    • Caterpillars
    • Spider mites
    • Citrus rust mites
    • Two-spotted mites
    • Armored scales
    • Soft scales
    • Leaf rollers
    • Fungus gnats

Insects are not the only pests to arrive in your garden. You may encounter fungal diseases like powdery mildew, black spot on roses, or greasy spot on citrus. Understanding the symptoms of all pests including fungal diseases will help you treat the problem more accurately.

Choosing the Best Insecticide for Vegetable Gardens

What is the difference between Insecticide vs Pesticide?

Pesticide is a term that refers to substances used to control and kill all types of garden or crop pests, including insects, weeds, fungi, and even rodents. Insecticide is a type of pesticide. Insecticide refers to a substance to kill insects like aphids, spider mites, and leaf miners. In short, an insecticide is a type of pesticide but not all pesticides are insecticides. Herbicide often gets confused with insecticide, but herbicides only refer to the killing of weeds or unwanted plants.

    Organic vs. Synthetic

Synthetic or chemical insecticide is manufactured by a process that chemically changes the substance. Synthetic insecticide can often be cheaper, but what it saves in dollar amount, it costs in other ways. For example, synthetic insecticide tends to exist longer in the soil and cause negative environmental impacts. Food grown with synthetic insecticide has a risk of contamination.

Organic insecticide or natural insecticide refers to naturally occurring substances. Organic insecticide is favored by many for its natural ingredients that are less harsh on your garden and the surrounding environment. Common ingredients of organic insecticides are neem oil, diatomaceous earth, pyrethrin, and essential oils.

    At a Glance:

    Synthetic Insecticide

    • Fast-acting
    • Leaves residual activity in the environment long after application
    • Can harm beneficial insects

    Organic Insecticide

    • Breaks down easily, leaving no residual activity in the environment
    • Tends to target specific pests and leave beneficial insects intact
    • Safe for organic vegetables
